The Department of Pathology and Forensic medicine, College of Medicine, University of Basrah was established in 1968. It teaches, and trains, the third, fourth year students the subject of Pathology and Forensic medicine.. Since its establishment, the Department was headed by nine of its staff, namely:

Vision
To provide excellent teaching for medical students as well as to provide high quality laboratory services for the diagnosis of histopathological cases, and forensic medicine . The department is devoted to conduct high quality research in specific topics of Pathology, Genetics, and Forensic Medicine.
Mission
The mission of the Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine is to provide excellent teaching, training, research and high standard diagnostic services for patient health care in Basrah and South of Iraq.
Our aim is to provide a supportive working environment so that each individual can excel and pursue achievements that lead to national and international recognition. We will accomplish this by developing mechanisms that make optimal use of our human and financial resources.
Objectives
The department is responsible for the following:
1- Teaching the third year medical and dental students the way of diagnosing the function and histological changes that is happen in different body organs due to the effect of various pathogenic agents.
2- teaching the fourth year medical students the forensic medicine , the science that deals with how to Know the real and direct cause of death and how to expect the correct age of human in addition to other forensic issues.
3- Training the postgraduate students of histopathology , hematology and dermatology .
4- Offering the diagnostic services and consultations needed to diagnose various histopathology and hematological diseases for all hospitals in Basrah and other southern governorates.
5- Registration of cancer in Basrah.
6- Diagnosing genetic diseases, performing genetic researches and genetic counseling.
Setting of the department
The main office of the department is located in the first floor of the Basrah Medical College Building. It contains the following units:
1. The Chairman's and Staff rooms.
2. Secretarial rooms.
3. The Slide Pathology museum
4.Gross pathology museum.
4. Pathology Laboratory
5. Cancer registration unit.
6. Genetic clinic.
Activities of the Department:
1- Participating in the diagnosis and consultation of histopathological and cytological slides for cases attending Al-Sader Teaching Hospital.
2- Carrying out diagnosis for genetic diseases.
3- Registration of cancer in the Governorate.
4-Participating in clinicopathologic conferences in Dermatology, Histopathology and gastroenterology .
5-Preparing special stains for diagnosis of fungal diseases.
6- participating in the medico legal examination of cases.

B- Practical part (2 hours per week) the main objectives of practical classes is to support the theory and to help the student to comprehend the basic principles in:
a- How to take specimens for Histopathological examination. The ways of preservation and fixation and the main histopathological techniques.
b- How to use the microscopes.
c- Examination of available of pathological specimen.
d- Examination of standard slides to demonstrate the microscopic changes in the diseased tissue or organ.
C- Tutorials (one hour per week) to give the student the opportunity to ask further information and to give the opportunity to the teachers to assess the standard of their methods of teaching.

Post graduate Training Programs
These include the followings:
A- M Sc in Pathology.
It was established in 1987 and supervised by the heads of the department.
Up to now 12 doctors were graduated and 2 students are being under training.
The study is consisting of one year course covering theory and practice in histopathology , hematology , microbiology, clinical biochemistry and clinical statistic (24 units) the passing in each subject is 60% and the weighted average for whole course (two terms) should be at least 70% .The second year is devoted for a research, and candidate should submit and to be examined in a thesis as a partial requirement for the fulfillment of degree(12 units).

B- Iraqi Board of Medical Specializations in Histopathology FIBMS (Path)
It was established in 1994 and supervised by:

Up to now 13 doctors were graduated, and one student is being under training.
The training grogram in FIBMS (Path) includes:
First year
1- Attending the preliminary course of pathology for postgraduate students.
2- 3 months general hematology (blood diseases, coagulation and blood transfusion).
3- 3 months in histopathology .
4- 3 months in medical microbiology.
5- 3 months in chemical pathology.
Passing the primary examination of the first year.
Second year
1- Training in forensic and histopathology (institute of Forensic Medicine) (2 months)
2- Training in surgical pathology with special stain, frozen sections.(7 months)
3- Training in electron microscopy , statistics, classification, records Keeping and quality control (1 month)
4- Training in fine needle aspiration(LNA) and exfoliative cytology (2 month).
Third year
1- Advanced training in the topics as mentioned in the 2nd year.
2- He completed a thesis required for his study entitled ((Clinic pathological, P53 immunostaining , and Cytogenetic Correlations of Retinoblastoma)) which was discussed on 8th . February, 2004.
3- Writing the histopathological report without singing out under the supervision of the adviser.
Fourth year
Examination of the daily routine slides and witting the pathology reports under the supervision of the supervisor.
Training in special pathology (renal pathology , immunohistochemistry, pediatric pathology , neuropathology, dematopathology, bone pathology, fine needle aspiration (FNA) and exfoliative cytology.
By the end of the 4th year of training the student has passed the final examination and completed all the requirement for the degree of "Fellow" of the Iraqi Board for Medical Specializations in Pathology / Histopathology and Cytopathology and awarded the degree foresaid on 13th. June, 2005
